About the Society

HAS is an active community of enthusiastic amateur astronomers with over 60 years of history in the Houston area. Membership has a variety of benefits, including access to a secure dark site west of Houston, a telescope loaner program, and much more. Joining our club is simple; you can sign up online or by mail.

Member Benefits

Astronomical League Membership

Sustaining, Regular, and Student members automatically become members of the Astronomical League and receive Reflector, the quarterly AL publication. See the Astronomical League website

Monthly Meetings

Members can attend two monthly meetings, generally held on the 1st Thursday and Friday of the month via Zoom. The first is planned especially for novice level members, and the second meeting is of interest to amateur astronomers of all levels. Check UPCOMING EVENTS for details

Columbus Dark Site

Complete the online orientation and gain access to our excellent dark site located near Columbus, Texas. See Our Observatory 

Annual and Special Events

Members are invited to a variety of events, including picnics at the Columbus Observatory, an Annual Banquet with featured speaker, observing field trips, and more. See the Founders Day event

Club Observatory

Complete a full-day training program and be eligible to use the club’s roll-off roof observatory building  and 14" telescope. Advanced training required for the other telescopes. See Our Observatory

Loaner Telescope Program

The Loaner Telescope Program is currently inactive.

Member-Only Site Features

Active members have access to private HAS website features. Members can post and manage photo galleries, trade gear, view recordings of some meetings and events, and manage their membership online

Special Interest Groups

Check out our Special Interest Groups, or SIGs. Groups are organized for those interested in astrophotograpy, visual astronomy, observing with binoculars, and electronically assisted astronomy. Contact info@astronomyhouston.org for more.

Monthly dues for new members are full rate for the remainder of the calendar year.  However, any new member joining on or after October 1 will have their dues cover the remainder of the calendar year PLUS the next calendar year.

Join By Mail

Please download and fill out the Membership Application and mail the application to our postal address: Houston Astronomical Society, PO Box 131282, Spring, TX 77393. The club treasurer will process your membership and contact you within 1-2 weeks.
