Meade LS-8 loads 8 C batteries. The alkaline ones last 3-4 hours so a 12V adapter is needed. The NiH rechargable batteries voltage is too low. I bought Lithium ones 1.55V form Ebay a set from Singapore.
The lithium battery capacity is 60% of good alkaline one but you can easily recharge them as shown in attached photos.
