April Novice Presentation - via Zoom

Event Date

The HAS Texas 45 Progression

Speaker: Rene Gedaly

Visual astronomy is all about knowing where to look, when to look, and how to look. The purpose of visual observing lists is to tell you what to look at, too. That's what the HAS Texas 45 observing program is all about. But wait, there's more. The program has been improved with field notes to give you, the beginning observer, better access to the easier 30 objects on the 60-object list. The reorganized program is called the HAS Texas 45 Progression.

In this novice presentation I'll cover the tips and tricks experienced amateurs use to approach observing successfully, whether working the "45" or any other observing program. Want to take your skills to the next level and move from stargazer to visual observer? I thought so. Come learn how to develop these skills and learn the rules so that you, too, can earn a beautiful certificate, snazzy pin, and see your name in lights.

About Rene

An avid visual observer, Rene got hooked on astronomy in girlhood on a moonless, nighttime hike in the Maryland countryside. Turning off her flashlight, she looked up and discovered she could see the path forward by the light of the Milky Way alone. Since joining the Houston Astronomical Society in 2009, Rene has served on the board of directors in various positions including president. Rene currently chairs the membership committee, coordinates the Women's SIG, and is a trainer on the two visual telescopes housed in the HAS Observatory. Rene is the author of the HAS Texas 45 Observing Program. She still enjoys hiking by the light of the Milky Way—but now with her grab n go telescope.
