Student Astronomy Research and Science Fair Projects

Science Fair_6.jpgHAS is very supportive of student STEM activities, espeicially where we are able to use our love and knowledge of astronomy to provide learning experiences for them. As part of this initiative, HAS for the last several years has devoted our June member meeting to highlighting the fine work of some of these students.

Bellaire High School Astronomy Research Team – For the past several years, a group of Bellaire High School students has formed a research team with the goal of doing professional level astronomy research, including writing and (hopefully) publishing a research paper. This is an extra-curricular, voluntary activity undertaken by the students to further their experience of doing real scientific research and their passion for astronomy and astrophysics. The team advisor is Bellaire High School Physics and Astronomy teacher and HAS Member Jimmy Newland.

HAS has been supportive of this student group, and has provided the students with an opportunity to gain additional experience by having them present their work to an audience with a high level of astronomy knowledge.

Science Fair Astronomy Projects – For many years, HAS has supported the Science and Engineering Fair of Houston (SEFH) by supplying volunteer judges to evaluate student astronomy or astronomy-related projects. In 2019, Four HAS voluteer judges attended SFEH which was held at the George R Brown Convention Center on February 22 & 23. We are very excited and proud to announce that our main program for the June membership meeting will feature several of the students presenting their projects from SFEH 2019. These are some of the best projects we have judged to date!

Please join us to listen to their presentations, and encourage the students continuing interest in astronomy and the sciences.
